I drew my first one (really badly) for the Mercury in 1985. I had no doubt my cartooning career would be brief. I fully expected that someone in authority would tap me on the shoulder, ask what the hell I was doing and show me the door.
In hindsight I realise that when I started I actually didn't have any idea what I was doing ... thirty five years in and, at times, I still wonder if that's the case.
I worked for News Corp Australia for over thirty years, took a redundancy three years ago and have been drawing my cartoons from home ever since. Some days I even get dressed.
